Now I know what you are thinking, “Don’t tell me what i should like and dislike”. Well I apoligise, but in this case you need to be told about what I think is the best sport in the world.
A little bit of a history lesson, Rugby to unpopular belief to some people is split into two different sports, or codes as some people will call them.Union and League. Rugby Union is the original format of Rugby. Rugby League’s story is interesting, League moved away from Union in 1895 where 22 club representatives met to create the Northern Rugby Football Union at The George Hotel in Huddersfield. This was due to players wanting payment for time they may have missed at work due to playing Rugby. This idea was proposed to the RFU earlier, but was turned down.
So why is this break away sport the best sport in the world you ask?
Firstly, rugby league is one of the most intense games in the world. It is 80 minutes of constant action, wheter that be in defence or attack. Players have to be some of the fittest athletes in the world to compete. They need to be the perfect balance between strong and agile. The ideal rugby league player has changed over the years, but no more are rugby players just big brutes.
These players also do things that defy physics. From flying wingers such as Tom Johnstone to magical half-backs like Brodie Croft. And a long list of players who can turn a game around.
Rugby League fans are some of the best, they support their team everywhere they go through thick and thin. They are passionate, but when someone in the sport needs help they come together. The greatest example of this would be Rob Burrow, where the whole rugby league community has come together to help donate money to the MND Association.
Headingley stadium was fully sold out for a pre-season friendly in 2020, where the whole aim was to support the Burrow family.
There are many rivalries in rugby league, due to how close teams are together a derby is never far away. Some of which you may have heard. The Great St Helens and Wigan Warriors derby. And the Hull Derby between FC and KR. Rugby League is full of derbys that are unpredictable.
And Rugby League is played in the summer. Whats better than a hot summer night on the terraces at your favourite teams stadium.
So why wouldn’t you watch rugby league?
