The classic Good Friday clash returns this Easter weekend, as the Saints and the Warriors go head-to-head for the first time this season. A game which many believe is between the two favourites for the Super League this season.
The Good Friday Derby has been one of the marquee events of the rugby league calendar since the first meeting of the two sides in 1895 (The year Rugby League was created). Which ended 0 – 0, with the close proximity of the towns It was always going to become a fierce rivalry.
Now in 2024 the sides meet each other again, as two of the most successful rugby league clubs of all time, looking to gain the early bragging rights and potentially take the first set into a charge for Old Trafford.
Last season the Warriors were the ones to win the Good Friday clash, defeating the Saints 14 – 6. Which set an early indicator of how good the Warriors side were, as they beat at the time World Club Champions and 4 times in a row Super League champions. Wigan went on to win the Super League. However, the Saints were able to take revenge in the last meeting between the sides where they beat the Warriors 34 – 16.
Now the roles have reversed Wigan are the World Champions and Super League Champions, and Saints have a point to prove in the derby. Both sides come into the game on the back of three wins in a row, and level on the same tally of points.
Going into the game it is very hard to tell who the favourites are for hopefully another classic encounter between the two great clubs.
So let me know who you think will win.
My prediction is Saint Helens by 4 points, at a sold out Totally Wicked Stadium.
