It has been almost two weeks since the sad passing of Rugby League legend and MND warrior Rob Burrow, and the whole world of sport has been able to show how much this man meant to them. This Friday, the Rhinos come home for the first time sine the loss of Rob, and with a crowd expected to be a sell-out.
Rob was not only one of the greatest rugby league players, but also one of the kindest sports people that I have met during my visits to Headingley. Rob has been hailed by his former teamates with a phrase, small in stature, massive in character. And it describes the man perfectly.
His on-field work was mind-blowing, he was lightning quick and was a handful for even the best defenders in the world. All of which were on show in the 2011 Super League Grand Final, where Rob took the game into his own hands and scored the greatest ever Grand Final try, ducking underneath the defence and burning the Saints with his pace.
But as most have said this week, Burrow’s true character came out in the past 4 years. After being diagnosed with MND Rob has become a hero, and a figurehead of raising awareness for such a horrible disease. Burrow has raised millions of pounds, and the donations don’t look like they will be slowing down anytime soon.
This Friday, Leeds will return to Headingley to face the Leigh Leapords. This game is also the Rhinos game for MND awareness, and the first time the whole Rhinos community will be able remember Rob together. It will be an emotional game, and hopefully a better performance from the lads in blue and amber.
I will be at the game so expect a match report in the days following.
Our thoughts and prayers are still with the whole Burrow family, the man was a true legend and will never be forgotten.
