Typical of Britain at this time of year the weather did not know what to do with itself.
The morning warm up started with the heavens falling, which after a night of heavy rain , made the track extremely slippery. Shown by the many wobbles by different drivers across the field. Turn One looked particularly tricky due to the kerbs, which many cars skated over.
It was a first chance for me to see the 2 Seas Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 driven by Ian Loggie and Phil Keen. This was strikingly different compared to other cars seen over the weekend, which was shown by the surrounding crowd of the garage on the pit walk. And after struggles in Qualifying; Warm up was very promising for the 2 Seas team, as they finished 2nd.
Barwells number 63 car driven by Rob and Ricky Collard, had the opportunity to win the drivers championship this weekend if they were able to win the race outright. And they did just that in very dominant fashion. It took only 10 minutes for both Barwell Lamborghini’s to make a huge gap on the field. But even with pressure from behind by Car 78, Rob Collard was able to stay infront and make his way through the GT4 field with ease.
Their day was to get even better when Car 78 was forced into an early pit stop, after Alex Martin’s Lamborghini punctured a tyre. This was extremely unlucky, as it was destined to be a very dominant 1-2 for the Barwell outfit.
With not much of a battle at the front as spectators we were forced to look down the field with a great battle between the Garage 59 Mclaren driven by Shaun Balfe and Chris Smalley, and the Team ABBA racing Mercedes driven by Richard and Sam Neary. Which went on from just before the Pit window opening where Richard Neary performed arguably the overtake of the season into turn one. To right at the end of the race where sadly after a safety car Neary crashed out, leaving a great podium, and Silver-Am victory for still title contending Garage 59.
The Podium for the overall race was as follows:
- Barwell Motorsport 63 – Rob Collard , Ricky Collard
- Blackthorn 87 – Giacomo Petrobelli, Jonny Adam
- Garage 59 (59) – Shaun Balfe , Chris Smalley
I will be reviewing the rest of the weekend in a later post, but I thought i should give a GT3 report for you to read. Leave a comment below if you have attended a British GT event, or if you plan on doing so.
