The championship leader had a massive moment in the chase of the Gresini rider, but on lap 21 the inevitable happened as Marc Marquez retook the lead and never looked like slowing down. Franco Morbidelli showed early signs of pace after starting on the soft rear tyre, and at one point looked like challenging for the victory of the grand prix. His teammate Fabio Di Giannantonio’s last lap overtake on the once again impressive Honda rider Johann Zarco, secured an all-Ducati top 5 in the race.
The reigning Moto2 champion and rookie Ai Ogura impressed again as came from 15th on the grid on his Trackhouse Aprilia to finish 8th place. Behind the KTM of Brad Binder who finished 7th place, almost 15 seconds off the lead of the Grand Prix.
His teammate Pedro Acosta claimed 9th place, closely followed by the Honda Pairing of Joan Mir and Luca Marini. Marini scored his highest finish as a Honda rider.
The highest placed Yamaha came from Alex Rins who placed 12th ahead of Maverick Vinales in 13th and Jack Miller in 14th. The final point scorer was the 2021 world champion Fabio Quartararo, whose race was compromised at turn 1 on the first lap, when Marco Bezzecchi ran into the back of him forcing him into the gravel.
It was another tricky day for runner up of last year’s world championship Pecco Bagnaia, who really struggled to keep up the pace of his teammate. Bagnaia is now 31 points off the lead of the Championship, heading into another of Marc Marquez’s favourite tracks the Circuit of Americas in Texas.
Update: Ai Ogura has been disqualified from the Argentinian Grand Prix for using software not homologated by the championship on his bikes ECU. Raul Fernandez now scores a point coming home in 15th place.
