The highly anticipated Super League Semi Final between Wigan and Leigh is in doubt after a statement from the Wigan Warriors on social media earlier today. Leopards owner Derek Beaumont according to the statement has informed the Warriors in writing that they do not intend to fulfil Friday’s scheduled Semi Final.

It seems that this is due to a disagreement on the amount of allocated tickets for Leopards supporters for the Semi Final, in the statement Wigan explain that due to safety reasons, Leigh would be offered either 4,600 unreserved seats or 5,400 seats at the Brick Community Stadium this Friday. Wigan also highlighted within the statement that “It is important to note that the allocation was well above the minimum 10% required for away supporters.”

Leigh are yet to make their own statement on the situation, but have released their 21 man squad for the game this Friday.

This is another tough moment for the RFL who have come under large amounts of scrutiny, for multiple reasons this season, and just needed the remainder of the Play Offs to run smoothly. And in what should be the most exciting time of the season, most people are left wondering whether this game will take place. The RFL are also yet to make a statement at this time.

All this situation has done is bring the game into disrepute, 2 days before what could be a very historical Semi Final fixture.

For Rugby League, the best news would be a confirmation that this fixture will take place this Friday. And that Leigh and Wigan put on a show that makes people forget the disaster of a build up to a Super League Semi Final.

    Update to this story:

It is strongly believed that Leigh will take to the field this friday night, firstly great news, secondly a little more information has come out surrounding the frustrations of the event from the Leigh side.

Leigh sold out their allocation of 4,800 tickets in the North Stand of the Brick Community stadium on Tuesday. Which they then advised fans who had yet to purchase a ticket that they should purchase seats close to the Leigh end in the east stand.

According to multiple fans on social media and reported by Matt Shaw at All Out Rugby League, Wigan have been contacting Leopards supporters who had purchased tickets in this area of the stadium and explained they would not be able to validate these tickets over genuine safety concerns surrounding segregation.

It is believed to only be a small number of supporters who have had their tickets cancelled, however it is believed that this could be rectified before kick off. Wigan have updated their policies for this game, requiring the buyer to have previous purchase history with the club.

So after a lot of meetings and disagreements over the allocation, it looks like we will be getting a local derby for a Semi Final after all.
